EDIT: Here we go! A list of characters who have Book 6 completed for them. The ones marked [none] are characters who don't show up in the book, but I've updated them on the list so that you now know that they don't.

Cho Chang
Dobby and Winky
Dolores Jane Umbridge
Fred and George Weasley
Irma Pince

11:22 pm - Yes, it's been ages, I know...

12:22 am - Long-winded reply to concern.
Someone emailed me today asking why I am not collaborating closely with the Definitive Harry Potter Canon Characterization Guide. This is the latest in a string of such emails, so I'm going to address it.

The DHPCCG is doing something quite different from what I'm trying to accomplish. The website complites what I would call "profiles" of characters. Only "relevant" quotes from the texts are included, and some of the volunteers who compile the information also include their own opinions and thoughts about the characters and which things are "important" about each character.

That's great. BUT, it isn't what I'm doing.

From the start, I decided to include every reference to each character that can be found in the books. Even if it's not realy important, not really relevant, or not very interesting. If the character is mentioned, I will put it into that character's file.

None of my files include my opinion of the characters. It's true I have my biases, as does every fan of the Harry Potter books. However, my files will not reflect any preference or prejudice I may have, because they contain only information from the books themselves. Nothing is omitted. I have chosen not to take on the task of deciding which information is important. Fanfiction authors often take small details and build a story around them. I want to preserve those details.

Character profiles -- short, concise, and easy to refer to -- have their place. They're great when you just want an overview of a character. What I'm trying to do, however, is to provide a place where all information about a character can be found, without re-reading the books.

So there you have it. On the one hand there's a concise overview of the important aspects of a character, and on the other hand there is a list of every word to come out of that character's mouth. Different, right?

I also prefer to work alone, really. I can't imagine trying to coordinate volunteers. I like to know what is being done and how it's being done, and when it will be finished. :-)

I found the DHPCCG just as I was starting work on my own website, and I did have misgivings about possibly doing "the same thing" as the webmistress of that site. However, it quickly became obvious that I would not be doing the exact same thing. The two websites are different, and each will hopefully be a source of help for fanfiction authors in its own way.

I hope that clears up the issue.

7:27 pm - Dumbledore finished!
I wish there wasn't still Book #5 to do for him, but at least I have finished for now.

The two files (Book 3 and 4) are on the main page.

Ack. My internet connection is soooo slow today, it's killing me. It took about 10 minutes to upload a 196kb file, with it failing twice. I have Cable, so I don't understand what's wrong with it. :-(

I noticed something interesting today as I was looking through the stats on my site. The Remus Lupin file for Book #3 is leading all others by over 100 views. Weird. I would have thought it would be Snape, but he is actually fourth on the list. This is probably due to advertising though. The first place I ever advertised in was a Lupin/Black group.

11:59 am - Website organization.
I edited the main page so that now the files that are truly finished (books 1-5) are separate from all the other files.

I'm still trying to figure out how to organize the files. Alphabetically was okay until the list got so long, but now it's a bit hard to find things. :-(

I guess I will experiment with layouts. Unless someone else had some ideas for me?

9:52 am - Book 5.
I have decided to do some Book 5 files. Neville's file was quite fun to do because the book is still a bit new to me.

So, here are the ones I have finished:

Alicia Spinnet
Angelina Johnson
Cedric Diggory
Charlie Weasley
Dennis Creevey
Gilderoy Lockhart
Oliver Wood
Professor Quirrell
Viktor Krum

There were all very, very easy to do. The hard ones will have to wait.

7:41 pm - Expanded List.
I have expanded the list of characters I plan to do. The list is now very long and includes most characters who play a role in the books. I realize that a few minor characters from Book #5 are missing, and I will add them when I begin working on that book.

For those interested, here it is: Read more...Collapse )

2:07 am - A few more files finished.
Lets see...

Cedric Diggory, Peter Pettigrew, Voldemort / Tom Riddle, Viktor Krum, and Igor Karkaroff have all been finished (books 1-4).

Moving on to others...

The "big" files left to do are Albus Dumbledore (damn, I'll never finish this one, will I?), Arthur and Molly Weasley, and James and Lily Potter. I'm truly hating working on these. I may take a break to work on other files.

10:01 pm - Neville Longbottom and some girls...
The Neville Longbottom file is complete! I have taken time out from Dumbledore and the rest to finish Neville, who is arguably my favorite character.

All five books have now been referenced for Neville, making him the first character to be finished through Book #5. :-)

I also did books 1 through 4 for the following characters: Alicia Spinnet, Angelina Johnson, Katie Bell, Millicent Bulstrode, Penelope Clearwater, Susan Bones.

You will find a link to the new files on the main page, as usual. http://www.geocities.com/willowsevern/

Okay, well, back to Dumbledore...

4:06 pm - Lj for updates.
I have decided to start up an lj to make it easier to keep everyone updated on my progress. I have been receiving dozens of emails every day, and although I definitely appreciate people taking time to write, it is starting to be time consuming to answer questions like "how soon before X is finished?" This is, hopefully, the solution to that problem.

At the moment, I am working on Dumbledore (book 3 and book 4 simultaneously). I will hopefully have him finished soon. He's one of those characters I don't enjoy doing, because I don't particularly like him, plus he's on practically every page...

I can't wait to finish the "big" characters and get to the lesser ones, just because of how easy they will be in comparison. It is very hard to do characters like Arthur and Molly Weasley, for example, because of all the references under which they may be found. I have to search for the keywords: arthur, molly, father, mother, mum, dad, mrs weasley, mr weasley, and parents, to get all the references, and I have to pay close attention. A different character, for example Dobby, is really easy because I just search for "Dobby" and possibly "house-elf" and that's it. Voldemort is pure torture to do. The keywords are not just you-know-who, he-who-must-not-be-named, voldemort, riddle, etc., but also all those places where someone begins to say his name and is then cut off. It's very difficult to search for those. Same with Harry's parents.

But, overall, it's actually an enjoyable project...

Though I suppose it's redundant to say so, since I would not be doing it if I did not get some enjoyment out of it, would I?
